I attended Southern Connecticut State University where I got a BS in communications specializing in video production. I finished the degree and was nominated for the Lawrence Fitzgerald award and inducted into Lambda Pi Eta.

I had about 30k in student debt of which half has been paid off since I finished a year ago. I enjoyed the courses but I have yet to land a full time video job. I have 3 part time seasonal jobs and am on food stamps. I would recommend it to others for knowledge, but truthfully I learned more from tutorials online and getting interested in the material then from school itself, and people could totally self educate with google and youtube these days.

If I could do it all over again I would not get a degree and would have bought a Red One instead to make money as a DP. But without school I didn’t even know about Red Digital Cinema cameras so being introduced to high end cinema models was what spurred my interest in high end work.

I guess I should thank school for that, though I can’t afford a decent camera for quite some time as a result of getting a degree and taking on extensive debt. I applied to many free internships in broadcast after not being able to find paid entry level work but I have yet to get my foot in the door in any capacity in broadcast and/or film. I do a lot of shitty craigslist jobs but they don’t pay well at all and I needed to buy a mac, a hd camera, final cut 7, cs5, and avid so i spent a ton of cash and am slowly making it back, but its not self sustaining work. I really have no clue on how to be successful in this field and hope I can figure out some way to get a full time job or high end freelance work consistently.
