I study at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at Cal State University Long Beach. I study music education. I spent two years, as a vocal performance major; and then changed to education because I saw more future in the field. And I had more interest in teaching music than, I did in simply performing voice music. There are about 125 out of 500 students right now, that are on full tuition scholarship, and I’m fortunate enough to be one of them.

I’m still in school and I have actually gotten a fair amount of work within the music industry as an audio-visual technician. Also as music teacher, I teach guitar lessons., I teach voice lessons. I mainly do what’s called vocal coaching, which is taking students who already know their repertoire, and already have a decent idea about how to use their instrument into the performance practice. And although I’m not as much of a performer anymore, in terms of classical music, I still use that little bit of experience into driving those students further.

I would recommend music school to those who truly want to learn about music. There’s a difference between wanting to learn more about your instrument and getting better at your craft. Like if you’re a guitarist and a songwriter. Wanting just to learn more about songwriting is different than wanting to learn about music. Learning about music really means that you’re getting into the depth of what there is to study, in terms of theory, in terms of harmony, compositional aspects, the history of music as we know it to be written down. Which comes to about 1200 years of history, it’s a lot more than just getting into the performing in choir or performing in band or performing in jazz groups and whatnot. I would pretty much only recommend music school to those who truly want to study music.

I would definitely do it all over again. I think it was a great decision. Even though I was a little bit blind at the time, I was only 18, deciding the next four-and-a-half years of my life. I think the greatest thing is that I have met hundreds and hundreds of wonderful people who are truly dedicated at getting better at what they do.

I have to say my expectation were not met. I had fun but and did learn how to shoot and edit, they don’t teach you how to find work. Once you’re out of money, school or ready to leave, they don’t seem to care if you find work or not. They need more classes that explain how to find work.

If you already know camera and editing on your own it’s not worth it. College is what you make of it; if you want to learn you will, if you don’t know much and would like to learn it’s good for that. I look a few writing classes, but I pretty much taught myself how to write screenplays.

I graduated in 2005 with about $20,000 in student loans. I had fun but and=did learn how to shoot and edit, they don’t teach you how to find work. Once you’re out of money, school or ready to leave, they don’t seem to care if you find work or not.

They need more class that explain how to find work. I found a few PA gigs, but now I do some script work. I sold a few non-union scripts.
